If your doctor says you may need an angiogram or angioplasty, don’t worry. These procedures sound complex, but they are safe, common, and often lifesaving.
Here’s what you should know.

What Is a Coronary Angiogram?

A coronary angiogram helps your cardiologist check whether your heart arteries are blocked. It is a minimally invasive test done under local anaesthesia, so you will be awake and comfortable.

During the test, your doctor inserts a thin tube through your wrist or groin and gently guides it to your heart. Then, a special dye is injected into the arteries. The dye shows up on an X-ray, allowing your doctor to see any narrow or blocked arteries clearly.

Because the results appear right away, your cardiologist can discuss treatment options on the same day.

Next Steps After an Angiogram

After reviewing your results, your doctor will recommend one of three paths forward:

  1. Minor blockages – Medication and healthy lifestyle changes are usually enough.

  2. Multiple or complex blockagesBypass surgery may be a better long-term solution.

  3. Severe but suitable blockagesAngioplasty can help open the artery and restore blood flow.

Each plan aims to improve your heart health and reduce the risk of future heart problems.

How Angioplasty Works

During an angioplasty, your doctor uses a small balloon to widen the blocked artery. When the balloon inflates, it pushes the plaque aside and restores blood flow.

In many cases, your doctor places a stent, which is a small metal mesh tube. The stent helps keep the artery open for the long term.

A coronary angiogram usually takes less than 30 minutes.
An angioplasty can take one to two hours, depending on the number and type of blockages.

Most patients go home the next day and feel better within a few days. Recovery is usually smooth and fast.

When to See Your Cardiologist

If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or risk factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes, talk to your cardiologist.
They can decide whether you need an angiogram or angioplasty.

Getting checked early can prevent heart attacks and protect your long-term health.
