About Elaine Huang
Dr Elaine Huang is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Eye Max Centre and is currently practicing in Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
Dr Huang was formerly an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. She graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery (2002). She went on to specialise in Ophthalmology and obtained the Master of Medicine (MMed) in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS). She was also a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS) and was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal for being one of the top candidates at the ophthalmology specialist exit examinations.
She then went on to complete her advanced subspecialty training fellowship in surgical and medical retina at SNEC. She was also a Clinical Lecturer at SNEC and NUS and had been an examiner for the ophthalmology specialist examinations.
Dr Huang specialises in managing general ophthalmology conditions, complicated and advanced cataract surgery, glaucoma, and has subspecialized expertise in managing vitreo-retinal conditions such as retinal detachment, floaters and selective treatment of floaters with laser vitreolysis, macular disorders like epiretinal membrane and macular hole surgery, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, myopia and trauma related conditions.
She has won several awards for her dedication to patient service, academic and research excellence. She was bestowed the SingHealth Junior Doctor Award (2007) and was a recipient of the Silver Award of SingHealth Excellent Service (2013). She also received the Outstanding Faculty Award at the SingHealth Residency RISE Awards (2014). Dr Huang’s dedication to research has earned her the First Prize in Research at the 3rd Research Day at The Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital (2007). She was also one of the best presenters at the Best Systematic Review (Surgery) at the 16th Annual Scientific Meeting Evidence-Based Medicine Seminar (2007) held at the Singapore General Hospital.
Her research interests include macular and vitreoretinal disorders as well as cataracts, vascular and inflammatory eye diseases. She has many publications in local and international journals and has spoken at international conferences on topics ranging from cataract surgeries to vitreoretinal disorders. She has also presented at the annual nationwide AMD Awareness Week in Singapore.
Dr Huang is thankful to God for everything she has and is appreciative of the opportunities she has to help others. She remains a supporter of not-for-profit voluntary health service and has participated in numerous eye screenings for the public and in nursing homes. She has great passion in teaching young doctors and optometrists, and strives to inculcate a spirit of life-long learning to her colleagues.
Outside of medical work, she is a happy wife and a mother to 3 lovely children. She treasures serving God on the church music ministry and loves warming the benches as the family cheerleader at tennis matches.

Before becoming an eye specialist in Singapore, he was formerly the Medical Director of LSC Eye Clinic in Paragon (formerly Lasik Surgery Clinic) where he introduced SMILE surgery to the practice in 2013 and has performed thousands of laser refractive and cataract procedures. About Niall Crosby
Dr Niall Crosby is a Consultant in International Eye Cataract Retina Centre at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and Farrer Park Medical Centre, Singapore.
Dr Crosby obtained his undergraduate medical degree (MBChB) and a research degree in Neuroscience (BMedSc) from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK), achieving honours in several subjects including ophthalmology.
Dr Crosby brings with him a wealth of experience, having worked in 15 different eye departments on three continents. He has mentored and trained several surgeons in retinal and cataract surgery and is actively involved in research, having authored numerous publications and delivered lectures to other eye specialists both within Singapore and abroad. He also participates as a peer-reviewer for international scientific journals. He previously taught ophthalmology to medical students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and also devised and led the ophthalmology module of the Physician’s Assistant Degree Course at the University of Birmingham Medical School, teaching ophthalmology to five academic year groups.
His specialist areas of research are focused around the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases, in particular on retinal imaging technology, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments and the surgical management of endophthalmitis. He is also working with the Birmingham Institute for Glaucoma Research on optimising patient safety in ophthalmic surgery, ophthalmic anaesthesia and elite performance in ophthalmic surgery. He recently co-authored his first book, ‘Foundations of Intraocular Microsurgery: Principles for Elite Performance’ which deals with the foundational skills to make ophthalmic microsurgery safe. Dr Crosby’s approach is to spend time carefully listening to the patient and taking a detailed history and conducting a thorough examination, supported by investigations and imaging using appropriate technology. He strives to provide a friendly, tailored approach to patient care and prides himself on providing clear explanations and involving the patient fully in decision making. Dr Crosby collaborates closely on the management of his patients with his extensive network of local and international colleagues around the world to ensure that his patients receive the best possible care.

Dr Val Phua completed his medical studies at National University of Singapore (NUS) and continued with his specialist training in Ophthalmology at Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). He completed his post-graduate studies with a Master’s degree from NUS (MMED) and a specialist qualification in Ophthalmology from UK (FRCOphth London).
Dr Val Phua has presented at multiple local and international ophthalmology conferences including Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ophthalmic Congree (MS-JOC), Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual meeting. He has published in several peer reviewed journals including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (IOVS), American Journal of Ophthalmoogy (AJO), British Medical Journal (BMJ) Open Quality and British Medical Journal (BMJ) Simulation and Technology Enhanced Learning. Dr Phua is passionate about teaching and education and was a contributing author to the Ophthalmology textbook “Practical Guide to VIVA and OSCE in Ophthalmology Examinations” and was the first author of another specialist textbook “Fundamental OSCE Guide in Ophthalmology”.
Despite the demands of a busy schedule, Dr Phua is a devoted Christian, a loving husband and father to his family. He is actively involved in teaching Sunday school and believes in a well-balanced lifestyle. He was a competitive swimmer and water polo player and captained the water polo team at Anglo-Chinese-School (Independent) and Anglo-Chinese-Junior-College at the “C”, “B” and “A” divisions. Dr Xu Yanping is an ophthalmologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.She specialises in glaucoma surgery and treatment, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, complex cataract surgery, and retinal disease treatment.
