Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Nivan Loganathan, Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Pain Physician at Total Pain Specialist Clinic.
Why does shoulder pain feel worse at night?
This is actually quite common. At night, when the body and mind are relaxed, the pain signals coming from the affected shoulder can feel more noticeable. During the day, we may have also overused the shoulder with activities such as cooking, driving, carrying items, or working. Because of this muscle overuse and inflammation, the pain can feel more intense later in the evening.
When should someone seek professional help for shoulder pain?
If the pain becomes unbearable, interferes with sleep, or affects your ability to perform daily activities, it is important to seek medical evaluation. Pain that starts to limit function or disrupts rest can worsen over time, so early assessment is recommended.
What if someone has tried multiple treatments but still has shoulder pain?
When shoulder pain persists despite rest, medication, or therapy, the underlying pain source may need to be addressed more directly. As pain specialists, we can offer:
-
Suprascapular nerve block – to reduce pain signals from the shoulder joint
-
Bursa injections – to calm inflammation in the shoulder
-
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections – to support natural healing in injured tendons
These treatments can help reduce pain, allowing physiotherapy to be more effective and restoring shoulder function over time.
How soon can relief be felt?
Many patients experience relief quite quickly because these treatments target the pain source directly. To support long-term improvement, we usually recommend continuing with physiotherapy to rebuild strength and movement.
A word of encouragement
If you are struggling with persistent shoulder pain, seek a review early. We can assess whether the pain is coming from the shoulder or the neck and work to identify the primary pain generator. With the right treatment plan, many patients achieve meaningful and lasting relief. PRIME
