1:00PM – THE SOUND OF SILENCE: HEARING LOSS | Ms April Chong
Hearing empowers us and helps us with our everyday lives without limitations, however, it is also an easy thing to take for granted. When hearing loss occurs, simple thing like following a conversation in a cafe or hearing telephone ring can become a real issue which can ultimately lead to feelings of isolation and depression. This talk will help us understand more about the symptoms of hearing loss, prevention, treatment and new hearing aid technology. As well as how can hearing aid improve the quality of hearing-impaired person’s lives and their families as well.
1:50PM – DETECTING DANGER: CANCER SCREENING | Dr Melvin Look
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Singapore. Cancers are curable if they are found and treated at an early stage, but most cancers do not have symptoms until they are advanced. The aim of comprehensive cancer screening is to detect these cancers at an early stage and help prevent cancer by treating pre-cancerous problems before they turn malignant. Screening should be even if you have no symptoms but fall under the criteria for screening. This talk will help you know if you should go for screening for the various common cancers.
2:40 PM – TEA BREAK
3:10PM – STOP THE SNORE: THE FACTS ON SNORING | Dr. Lynne Lim
Snoring is not just noise. 70% of snorers have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where a lack of oxygen occurs due to airway obstruction and choking during sleep. OSA accelerates aging and cognitive brain decline and risks early onset dementia and drug resistant hypertension. Dr Lynne Lim will share all about the symptoms and risks of OSA and the importance of consulting an ENT doctor or Sleep Specialist to determine where the blockage is.
4:00 PM – DEGENERATIVE PAIN: OSTEOARTHRITIS & OSTEOPOROSIS | Dr. Daniel Phang
Like any machine, the body also starts wearing down. Our worn-down joints are where we feel the most discomfort and stiffness. Some even lose mobility as a result of such osteoarthritis. Also, with advancing age, our bones are increasingly brittle and susceptible to fractures. All these age-related ailments are commonplace and relevant in this period where Singaporeans live longer. Does this always mean a trade-off a lower quality of life? Today, Dr Daniel will be discussing minimally invasive procedures and medications used in the management of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
